Pneumoencephalography [r]: A historic neuroimaging technique based on replacing cerebrospinal fluid with a contrast agent (often simply air) to allow for sufficient soft-tissue contrast when imaging the brain with x rays; mainly used to evaluate the size of the brain ventricles which are enlarged in some neuropsychiatric diseases, e.g. in schizophrenia.
