Citizendium Getting Started
Quick Start | About us | Help system | Start a new article | For Wikipedians

Tasks: start a new article • add basic, wanted or requested articles • add definitionsadd metadata • edit new pages

Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start, and see Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, our help system and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forum is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any user or the editors for help, too. Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun! --Larry Sanger 19:57, 14 November 2006 (CST)

Category:CZ Live

Peter, Are "CZ Live" all articles that you added the category "Games Workgroup"? R.Versuri 18:21, 20 November 2006 (CST)

  • No, I'm just marking articles that I believe fall under "Games" better than "Hobbies", "Sports" or "Other Recreation". - Peter Blake 18:23, 20 November 2006 (CST)
    • Whoops - I re-read Larry's e-mail and realised that this isn't what he asked for. All these tags may well be swept away by the next pull of content from WP. Thanks for the heads-up Rilson. - Peter Blake 18:28, 20 November 2006 (CST)

Bringing articles to Top level in Literature (and elsewhere)

Hi Versuri,

Thanks for tagging these articles. I haven't checked, but do be sure to add a CZ_LIve tag as well, else when the CZ is "refreshed" from WP these tags will be overwritten (see Peter Blake's note above). That's why I only want to tag articles that really will be taken live, that is, articles that someone has committed to and will be substantially improving!

Cheers,

Russell Potter 16:58, 23 November 2006 (CST)

  • Russel, take a look at Larry's email. It is not necessary that the article is live to tag "Category:XYZ Workgroup (Top)". --Versuri 17:16, 23 November 2006 (CST)

Sorry, but this was just never made clear. Russell is right to say that if CZ Live isn't added to an article, then it might be overwritten--that's what we've said, anyway. But, on the other hand, when updating articles, we can sort on all sorts of categories for purposes of deciding what not to update. So we can say: update all articles except ones in the categories "CZ Live" or "...(Top)". So I think we ought to clarify the policy by saying that "CZ Live" is reserved for only those articles on which we have done significant work. So, in the end, the number of "CZ Live" articles should be the number of articles we've made significant changes to.

Actually, I would hope that before too long we won't need a "CZ Live" tag because "articles we've worked on" will be counted (and displayed a special way) automatically.

Happy Thanksgiving! --Larry Sanger 18:07, 23 November 2006 (CST)

marking medecine&biology

I am not completely sure what you intended me to do--and I am everyone is really guessing a little-- Is it to add the biology tag to the articles in medicine that should also be in biology? If Im mixed up about this, let me know. DavidGoodman 20:51, 24 November 2006 (CST)

Stephen Repetski

Versuri, please look at the pages that this new author has been adding before you mark them CZ Live-- I've already sent Zack & Peter H a message about him-- 22:26, 28 November 2006 (CST)

Electronics

I'd add electronics to a technology (or engineering) workgroup. Fred Salsbury 17:21, 1 December 2006 (CST)

cat picture

yes, thank you - I'd love it to be in the cat article. I'll make a place for a picture captioned something about "cats are famous for their enjoyment of domestic life".:) Nancy Sculerati MD 09:54, 12 December 2006 (CST)

could you put it up both ways (big and small). I'll remove the one I don't prefer. Thanks, Nancy Sculerati MD 10:47, 12 December 2006 (CST)

I'd like to see it another step bigger. There is something about the cat's smug expression that is qualitatively easier to appreciate in the origal size you showed me, though I think that might be just a bit too big - you could always put it up so we can see. There is a bright spot in the upper left of the picture. That is distracting and it would be great if you could dull or erase it. However, please don't crop the picture as it has such a perfect composition. Thanks, Nancy Sculerati MD 11:54, 12 December 2006 (CST)

I love it. Nancy Sculerati MD 12:18, 12 December 2006 (CST)

I like "cat in a basket without glare" :) , number 1. Love to see more of your pictures! Nancy Sculerati MD 16:15, 12 December 2006 (CST)

Why do you say it's not a good one? Totally expressive dog face. Is he your dog? Do you know if he is a mongrel? Or a specific breed? It has to do with caption. Please upload it to dogs. Nancy Sculerati MD 11:48, 14 December 2006 (CST)

Do you have something less deadly appearing? Where both animals look like they are having fun? Actually, I also really need pictures of dogs playing with each other - you know, the rump up, shoulders down, tail wag, and also postures of submission. Also, really need mother dog playing with pups/ pups at play with each other Nancy Sculerati MD 15:31, 14 December 2006 (CST)

On your last offers, I'll bid on 1, 4, and 5 for Dogs. Thanks so much! Nancy Sculerati MD

Yes, please. I'll stay off the article until you do. Nancy Sculerati MD

Thank you Nancy Sculerati MD

Big Cats

Hey, Versuri, would you be kind enough to put that tiger roaring picture into "big cats"? Is there a Citizendium commons or a source for images, by the way? (Not that I'd llikely leave you be if I knew how to do it myself):) Nancy Sculerati MD

I'd love these 6 uploaded to cats article. 1.Kos8.jpg‎ (41KB, MIME type: image/jpeg) 2.Cosmo, a seven-month-old cream tabby exotic, photo by Ycombinator, uploaded on 13 August 2005. 3.Image:Cat claws.jpg A cat showing its claws. 4.Titre : Un chat - A cat

Micrurus fulvius

Hi Rilson, While I appreciate your desire to contribute to Micrurus fulvius, if you want to help you're going to have to do a little better than that. I have a number of problems with your last edit: You did not included references for any of the information you added (I include references for everything), your statement about the fangs being short, blunt and not hollow is in error, you understate the potential seriousness of bites from this species (before Wyeth antivenin became available, 10-20% of bites were fatal). In addition, I disagree with your position that most specimens are too small "to easily inflict an open wound" (I'm sure I have a reference somewhere that dispels this myth; a snake's jaws can open almost 180°) and I'm disappointed about the way you somehow managed to use a generic common name for this species no less than four times within a single paragraph (I try to avoid using any names at all in the text. After all, it is a monograph). At any rate, all of it belongs in the Description section as opposed to the introduction.
Sorry to be so tough on you, but I'm just as hard on myself. So much nonsense has been said and published in the media regarding venomous snakes that great care must be taken to ensure that these articles are as accurate as possible. (If you want to reply, you can do so here, since I've temporarily added your talk page to my watchlist). --Jaap Winius 07:20, 23 December 2006 (CST)

What?? I only added the Category:CZ Live--Versuri 07:27, 23 December 2006 (CST)
Sorry, sorry! My mistake entirely! It was all Nancy Sculerati's doing. You just happened to be the last one to edit the article, but I failed to notice. Once again, 1000 apologies! --Jaap Winius 09:34, 23 December 2006 (CST)

snake venom images

Yes, Versuri, it's looks perfect- for now. I'm not sure what they mean by property of the US Federal Gevernment and therefore without copyright isue - my paraphrase. I do know that several citizens of our project have expressed concern about copyright, but I know you will upload the information about its source, so if its a problem we can sort it out later. I think some illustrations of the mechanisms of how the toxins in venom work are a great idea. Please upload it into snake venom and I'll move it and caption it when ready. Thanks. Nancy Sculerati MD

Thanks so much!!Nancy Sculerati MD

Daboia

Saw you removed the Commons link in this article. I thought we would eventually be using those again. Or, do you know something I don't know? --Jaap Winius 19:30, 26 December 2006 (CST)

Jaap, see in CZ:How to convert Wikipedia articles to Citizendium articles: Delete many template messages--particularly the ones that are for contributors and are self-referential. This includes timing-related messages, expansion requests, and all Wikimedia sister projects. --Versuri 03:58, 27 December 2006 (CST)
I thought I had asked a question about this early on and was subsequently under the impression that we would eventually establish a link to the Wikimedia server. However, after reading this, it looks like that isn't going to happen. Hmmm. I've got about 100 images all nicely organized on the Wikimedia server, and now I guess I'm going to have to upload them all (again) to the (slow) CZ server. This is going to be something like 2-3 days of work, and the results are not even going to be as satisfying. Ho-hum. --Jaap Winius 06:55, 27 December 2006 (CST)
Why not ask about it in the forum? --Versuri 07:06, 27 December 2006 (CST)
Well, in the forum (see link above), Larry starts off by saying that there are very good reasons for not using Wikimedia Commons and creating our own fork instead. Unfortunately, the last post is from Zachary Pruckowski, who explains that, because CZ is basically strapped for cash and technical assistance, he thinks "this'll have to be on the back-burner for 6 months or so." To me this is depressing, because without a system like Wikimedia Commons, you can't organize a large collection of images like this. --Jaap Winius 09:37, 28 December 2006 (CST)
I particularly don´t think that it is a big problem. Why not include a link to Commons page without using a template? --Versuri 09:54, 28 December 2006 (CST)

It's not so much about the link with the little Commons logo as it is about there being a link from CZ to the Wikimedia Commons system and all the images there. I supplied many of the images for the articles that I've worked on and don't want to upload them all again if I can help it. After all, if we do create our own Commons fork some time next year, that means we'll have access to all of my original uploads and any uploading to CZ that I do now will have been for nothing. Anyway, I've now explained this in a post on the forum and have asked them to consider creating a temporary link to Wikimedia Commons. We'll see what they say. --Jaap Winius 10:16, 28 December 2006 (CST)

Update: They actually do want to create a temporary link to Wikimedia Commons! The only problem is, they're missing a piece of software called InstantCommons. Once found and installed, many (if not most) of the images for the articles will reappear. --Jaap Winius 08:23, 29 December 2006 (CST)
I reverted "Daboia" --Versuri 08:36, 29 December 2006 (CST)
Okay, thanks. But, although I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I'm not holding my breath. --Jaap Winius 20:05, 29 December 2006 (CST)

Cat colors

Can you help me upload the images I picked from Wikepedia commons and put in the bottom of Cat colors? Nancy Sculerati MD 08:16, 22 January 2007 (CST)

Please look at the discussion page of Cat colors. Nancy Sculerati MD 16:37, 22 January 2007 (CST)

1) http://pilot.citizendium.org/wiki/Image:Pets2.jpg This cat appears to be a perfect Mackerel Tabby. I'd like a new picture, that shows the entire side- head to tail - of the cat clearly. Nancy Sculerati MD 09:50, 23 January 2007 (CST)

2) This is the cream tabby that is on wikipedia commons. Could you kindly put it on Cat colors in the same format as the other pictures that you placed there? Expandable thumbnail with caption. Thank you. Nancy Sculerati MD 09:54, 23 January 2007 (CST)

Architecture workgroup

Hello there, I noticed there's a 'hot-list' of architecture articles at the Architecture Workgroup. I was wondering why is Nail (engineering) considered a high priority Architecture article - it seems a bit incongruous? --Russ McGinn 05:17, 30 January 2007 (CST)

image

Hi, thanks for your notification. As for me there is no problem - this is my own work and, yes, I should have mentioned it in the description of the image. The problem is that this is not really a "copyright information". We lack licensing decisions ;) and possibly a mechanism that 'forces' us to chose a license in the uploading procedure. Once this is somehow solved, I'll tag my images properly. Maybe we should bring the question up to the forum. Best, --Alex Halicz (hello) 02:39, 13 February 2007 (CST)

...after a while (and consulting the forum, where we are encouraged to give a copyright info), I decided to tag my images by CC-BY-NC-SA just for a promotion of the idea. You might be interested to do similarly (I found some your images tagged just "own work")? I guess we have convergent views on license issues. Anyway, as long as it is own work, it can be re-licensed if some global decisions do not allow it. Best, --Alex Halicz (hello) 03:33, 13 February 2007 (CST)

Big Cleanup

Versuri, I notice that you did not add categories to Acontius. This is obviously a Classics Workgroup article. Could you please fix this and any other articles that were unlabelled? --Larry Sanger 09:11, 15 March 2007 (CDT)

Pembroke College, Oxford

I see that you labelled this as being very little changed from the Wikipedia article. What would need to be done to alter this? I though that I'd changed it considerably (not just from the first version here, but from the current version at Wikipedia). --Peter J. King  Talk  06:52, 23 March 2007 (CDT)

I am not sure. I think that Larry should decide about it. -Versuri 07:01, 23 March 2007 (CDT)
Sorry to push it, but if you're labelling articles, shouldn't you have some idea of the criteria you're using? --Peter J. King  Talk  08:10, 23 March 2007 (CDT)
I take I look at the WP version and see if it is similar. This is my criteria. It is subjective to say what is or not a little change. -Versuri 08:38, 23 March 2007 (CDT)
I just noticed this--the criteria are actually fairly objective, i.e., there are few cases in which we should disagree. "An externally-sourced (e.g., Wikipedia) article is "CZ Live" if there have been at least three significant changes in three different places to the wording of an article." Furthermore, "The following are not significant changes: removing unused templates, etc.; spelling and minor rewording; deletions." Finally, "To determine whether an article should be marked 'Live' you might have to click on the page history, and compare the most recent edit with the very first edit. Use the 'diff' between those two versions to determine whether the article has been changed enough."
As far as I can tell from the relevant diff page, Prof. King's main edits have been to move some paragraphs. If he has made three "substantive edits," i.e., edits that could not be described as "copyedits," then that is enough to make the article our own, i.e., for us to call it "live." If he assures us that he has, I think we should trust him and not investigate too closely, just because it's not that big a deal, after all.
Oops, and to explain the relevance of all that, I should add: status = 4 should be used for all articles that are not properly marked "CZ Live." All and only CZ Live articles are status = 0-3. --Larry Sanger 08:48, 23 March 2007 (CDT)

Thanks; I should say that I changed the article before bringing it over, so the diff isn't the only change between what's here and what's there. --Peter J. King  Talk  09:28, 23 March 2007 (CDT)

This one of the reasons why I said that it is subjective to say what is a little change. When you change the article before, it is difficult to see the difference. -Versuri 09:45, 23 March 2007 (CDT)

Sweden

Versuri, an author has tagged Sweden for speedydelete and I noticed that you were one of two people that removed a significant amount of material without asking for a deletion. This is a gray area article and I was wondering if you want to keep it. --Matt Innis (Talk) 18:46, 24 March 2007 (CDT)

Matt, I think that it should be deleted.-Versuri 18:49, 24 March 2007 (CDT)
