::That is a good idea.  There is one long-standing local paper, and I could maybe pay for a subscription to it and reach back issues.  I will check.  It is unlikely, however, that even that paper (which is quite good) would discuss issues such as racial segregation.  There is some kind of tacit understanding everywhere in the South that it is "just not discussed" publicly.  Which is the reason that it's so important, in my opinion, to make it explicit in Citizendium if we can. == About your message ==
Hi Peter.
I only edit the topics I am interested in, and I can't avoid talking about my own research findings if the subject does have an involvement about me (or opening a Wiki about myself for the clarities in public space etc.). So, I don't regard such things as self-promotion, but please let me know if you feel otherwise. I believe you must had the feeling on my opening of the white hole page. To be honest, black holes are only observed with concrete evidence recent years, and white holes are still lesser known both for the scientific community and in popular culture. This was why the introduction summary has been short, and I only introduced with the wording "claimed", so that I don't put too much possible subjective bias into the wiki page about facts. In my concept, I don't think Wiki page should contain too much original content, and so far only my research has substantial contents about white holes, or at least I haven't found ample scientific literature about it.
I used to be a Wikipedia user when it was starting out. Do you believe authoritative narratives are not self-promotion and are justified in public discourse? Something to reflect about, especially after the founder of Wikipedia being still in jail currently. This is also the reason I don't think the involvement about my own research is a conflict of interest with the policy.

Peter, I very much appreciate your efforts to keep Donald Trump up to date and accurate.  I just moved your passage about the 14th amendment over to the section on "Running again", which I've retitled "Running again, or trying to", and I went at my edits haphazardly and failed to comment my actions correctly.  Just wanted to let you know that I didn't delete your statements but only moved them, and added a bunch of details (possibly too many).  Anyway, it really helps that you are watching the article also for accuracy.  The legal landscape for Trump is constantly changing these days. Thanks for your interest.
I remembered it as an antisemitic phrase.  And, when I looked it up, to cite a reference, the first link I got was to the imperial Russian pale.
But, I used a different google search, and IT tossed up the use of the phrase in Ireland, a lot earlier.
I didn't know, but I learned the term references the Latin term palus, for a kind of surveying stake.
I was originally going to warn him it WAS antisemitic, and I changed it to COULD BE CONSIDERD anti-semitic.
A jewish person, who is on the watch for anti-semitic slights, is not going to be any happier with you if, when they confront you over using an anti-semitic slur, you give them a cheery laugh, and dismiss their concerns, saying:
:{| class="wikitable"

: "Oh, you thought I was using this phrase as used against Jews for hundreds of years, in Imperial Russia?  No, no, no, I was using it as used by a different kind of racist in 13th Century Ireland."
I'd always THOUGHT the phrase was solely anti-semitic, before I looked it up.
A young friend of mine was shocked when he used the term "gyp" -- a term occasionally used around here to assert someone is financially cheating you.  I told him the term originally was used by anti-Roma racists, because the Roma's colloquial term is "gypsy", and it implies all Roma - gypsies - are cheaters.  George Swan (talk) 05:55, 15 February 2024 (CST)

Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start. You'll probably want to know how to get started as an author. Just look at CZ:Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. Be sure to stay abreast of events via the Citizendium-L (broadcast) mailing list (do join!) and the blog. Please also join the workgroup mailing list(s) that concern your particular interests. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forums is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any constable for help, too. Me, for instance! Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun! Larry Sanger 17:18, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Buddhism/Religion Articles

Hey Peter--

Welcome to Citizendium. I'm glad to see someone else has popped up here who is interested in improving our religion articles (as well as-- to infer from your Pali Text Society articles-- a fellow Sanskritist). Our Buddhism stuff, in particular, is in a parlous state. Feel free to make whatever changes you like to the Buddhism article. I put out a similar request for comments a little while ago (on the Buddhism article in particular), and I have not heard anything back. I believe the outline on the Buddhism pages is mine, so please feel free to remove or switch it around. (I do like David Volk's comment on the forum to start off with modern practice, though.)

As you can probably tell, our religion articles need all the help they can get. Feel free to make changes or comments on Hinduism, Ashram system, Bhagavad Gita, Vedas, Yoga, Buddha, Upanishad (which should probably be moved to Upaniṣad or Upaniṣads, come to think of it), as well as whatever Christian stuff you feel like doing: Christianity, Nicene Creed, Papacy, Augustine of Hippo, Authors of the Bible, New Testament/Old Tesament, Pope John Paul II, Reformation/Reformed churches/Reformed theology. If my presumption about Sanskrit was right, please have a look at the article. The time may even be right to get something started on Pali. Don't get overwhelmed, of course; any contributions you could make would be great.

Take care, Brian P. Long 23:21, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Euclid's elements

Hi Peter, why don't you update Euclid's elements? I made an Ansatz of this article a while ago, but I'm sure you can improve it.--Paul Wormer 10:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

No there is no policy, but since Euclid's elements already exists, I would think that your energy would be better spent on that article. Now there is some duplication which is wasteful and makes it harder to find one's way in CZ.--Paul Wormer 11:20, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Keep up the good works on Euclid's elements! Regards --Paul Wormer 16:48, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Aether

Peter, I wrote about ether in physics and then I found it appropriate to write a little piece about he Greek god Aether. However, this topic is way beyond my horizon of expertise. I see that you are interested in religion, do you happen to know something about ancient Greek religion? If so, then could you improve my stub on Aether, the Greek god? Thanks, --Paul Wormer 13:33, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Notes

You're welcome. Why, I wonder, is the method for displaying footnotes so cryptic -- angle brackets and a virgule at the end? And under what circumstances would you NOT want the notes to appear? Seems that making them appear should be the default. Oh well.

Thank you for undertaking to rewrite the Buddhism article, which desperately needed it. Bruce M.Tindall 17:15, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Prime numbers

Hi Peter, I saw that you left a msg for Michael Hardy. I haven't seen him around for a long time, so maybe he won't answer you. It is best that you fix the error in the draft, and that you ask Barry Smith or Jitse Niessen (math editors who are still active) to have a look at it and then Matt Innis to replace the article by the draft. --Paul Wormer 12:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Eastern Orthodox Church

Thanks for the answer to one of my questions. Down at the end of the painfully long Talk:Eastern_Orthodox_Church#Editor_assistance_requested section, I've added some text, a proposed rewrite. Any comment there? Sandy Harris 00:08, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Citizendium charter drafting commitee nomination

Hi Peter, You've been nominated by a fellow Citizendium member to be a candidate for election to the Citizendium charter drafting committee.

If you haven't been following the discussion in the forums, we're getting ready to establish a charter for Citizendium that outlines the project's goals, ideals, and basic structure. To get the process moving, we put together a plan for electing a group of Citizens to compose a draft of the charter, which will then be submitted for community review. You can find more about the plan here.

You've been nominated by another Citizen to be a candidate for election to that committee. The next step is up to you: you may either accept or decline the nomination by going here and following the instructions at the top of the page.

If you have any questions, just let any of those who accepted know. Peter Schmitt 00:41, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Peter, I nominated you, but only yesterday, not weeks ago. My reason: Recently, you have actively contributed to discussions on general CZ topics. This shows your interest. It does not matter, I think, that you have taken a long break before. However, if you accept this nomination is up to you. Of course, if you were elected, participating will take some of your time. Peter Schmitt 10:59, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Charter drafting nomination

Hi Peter,
You were nominated by a fellow Citizendium member to be a candidate for a position on the Citizendium charter drafting committee, but you haven't indicated whether you want to accept or decline. To learn more about what the committee is all about, you can go to the page that describes the process. To indicate that you either accept or decline the nomination to participate in the process as a committee member, you should visit the subpage for nominations; there are instructions on what to do on that page.
Thanks much!

Re re-approval of Boiling point/Draft

Peter, will you please review Milton's responses to your comments on th Talk page regarding Boiling point/Draft, and note on the Talk page whether you consider them satisfactory, and if not, why not. Also, would you give your assessment of the article as to its meriting re-approval.

Thank you. —Anthony.Sebastian 03:04, 29 February 2012 (UTC), Aproval Manager.

Intervention

Your intervention in the middle of my drafting of British Empire/Timelines resulted in the loss of two hours of my work due to a clash of editing. Please be more patient.Nick Gardner 11:09, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I've had that happen to me on occasion. Nowadays I always copy what I've written on the computer before trying to save it on the wiki. Then the only risk is that the computer system might crash first, which has also happened on occasion.
However, I don't see how I'm expected to know that someone's in the middle of working on something. Peter Jackson 16:46, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Courtesy in that respect only requires that you wait until it is quite obvious that the current editor has ceased working in the area before you intervene. In this case, your hasty intervention - on the same day that the page was started - would have been time-wasting, even if there had been no clash Nick Gardner 20:40, 14 May 2012 (UTC).
You may be right. I'd just point out that having to investigate the article history would be yet another complication deterring people who want to contribute. Peter Jackson 08:31, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Nick and Peter: The best way to avoid intervention problems is for the original article creator to write the article in his/her sandbox (a subpage of his/her user page) and only transfer it to a new article page when he/she considers the article ready for editing by others. That is what I have done with all of the many articles that I have created. Milton Beychok 16:30, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia

Hi Peter:

I appreciate your additions to the article Wikipedia. I've made a lot of changes to this article over time. The sections on Editing Environment and Formal Organization have been posted on WP and so far have survived. Some useful changes resulted, which I incorporated on both sites. Formal organization has attracted 100+ hits a day, while Editing environment gets about 16+ hits a day. I hope these articles have a corrective effect upon their readers, who I hope will adopt a jaundiced but very accurate view of WP administration.

I cannot claim huge distance editorially from this subject, so I appreciate another pair of eyes. John R. Brews 19:47, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Could any of us here claim neutrality on this subject? Aren't we all to a greater or lesser extent refugees from WP? Peter Jackson 09:11, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Hosting services

Peter, do you know who hosts Wikinfo and Wikisage, what kind of services they have, what they pay, etc.?

Ditto Wikipedia. Anthony.Sebastian 22:16, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikinfo is hosted by ibiblio. Often inadequate capacity, but they provide it free. You could find more from Fred Bauder, who has an account here too. WikiSage is based in the Netherlands, so I'm not sure how relevant their circumstances might be. Wikipedia is so public I'd guess the information is likely to be available somewhere in the public WikiMedia pages. Peter Jackson 13:39, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I see you've joined Wikinfo now. Peter Jackson 13:55, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I joined Wikinfo, in part to look for ideas. Thanks for the info. Anthony.Sebastian 21:07, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Buddhist councils

I think it's good to feature articles that are under development because it's akin to giving incentive to develop new articles. Unless you object I will go ahead and feature the article tomorrow. (Chunbum Park 10:23, 15 February 2013 (UTC))

Well, it's now at least complete, covering all the councils I know about, though it still could do with improvement, of course. Peter Jackson 10:57, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
I must that when Cowdray House appeared on the welcome page it proved a spur to improve an article I was probably going to leave as adequate. People will react in different ways of course, but it worked in my case. It looks like whatever is in the recent changes stands a good chance of making it onto the welcome page. That would at least mean there's a chance they'll improve. On the off chance it doesn't it should be in a reasonable state to begin with. For instance it wouldn't have been a disaster for instance had Cowdray House remained as it was. Richard Nevell 20:32, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Elemental nomenclature

I agree with you Peter, perhaps in regards to naming we should be CZ:Be Bold and just do it? I note the author who created those articles with differing names to IUPAC standards, is no longer on the project. Meg Ireland 04:50, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Since no-one else was going to do it, it's now done. Meg Ireland 04:16, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for working on Pali Canon

Hi Peter, I just saw that you are working on the Pali Canon article and are interested in Buddhism. I've been trying to read through a lot of the Canon in the past two years. Finding it fascinating, and it's especially helpful to me that there are these new translations by Bikkhu Bodhi (spelling?); his comments are as interesting as the Canon writings are. Anyway, just checking in and thanking you for your efforts in that, and acknowledging your (shared with me) interest in Buddhism.Pat Palmer (talk) 16:16, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Approvals Committee Considering Your Article, Pali Canon, for Approval: Question

Peter, the approvals committee is considering your article on the Pali Canon for approval. Do you have any revisions/additions you would like to make before the committee renders its decision? Are the online links still active? If you wish, you can respond by email (anthony_sebastian@msn.com). Anthony.Sebastian (talk) 22:01, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

I've just checked all the online links. They're OK except for note 12, which gives an error message. I'll have a look at this when I find time.
There are no changes I want to make at present, but see my non-member comment. Peter Jackson (talk) 14:19, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
The link hasn't been archived, and I can't find a current link. I'll leave it for a while and see whether it reappears. If not, I could replace the statement it supports with a weaker one with a different reference. Peter Jackson (talk) 09:00, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

In the current situation, I may lose internet access without warning for months. This is just to reassure people that I'm not just another rat deserting the sinking ship. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible (if the site's still here.) Peter Jackson (talk) 10:58, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Well, with warning now. This is likely to be my last edit here for months. Peter Jackson (talk) 11:37, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

BBC rumours suggest it may be about to happen again, for a month. Peter Jackson (talk) 10:58, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. What's that about? I mean, in the U.S., when everything else shut down, we at least still had the 'net. Pat Palmer (talk) 11:25, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
I haven't got my own connexion. I use the libraries. Last time, I had no access between 21 March and 8 July. They haven't yet had confirmation of whether they're being closed this time. Peter Jackson (talk) 10:26, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
Oh! We have the same issue here. The Princeton, NJ, municipal library (a lovely place) provides internet for many people, and it has been closed since March. It is now partially open again but given circumstances, might have to lock up again. Sad. Pat Palmer (talk) 17:52, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
Believe it or not, as of 1/4 hour ago, they still don't know for certain whether the regulations coming into effect at midnight tonight will allow them to stay open, but they think so. Peter Jackson (talk) 10:24, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Quinto (card game)

Peter, Your excellent article on Quinto (card game) inspired me to write Quinto (grid game), which turned out to be quite an adventure. Just wondering if by any chance you own the card game, because if so, we could use some images of it to dress up your article. Rather than make a disambig page, I just cross-referenced the articles to each other. Pat Palmer (talk) 20:42, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

No, I haven't got it myself. I came across it in Hervey's book of card games, and we tried it at school just using ordinary cards. There are pictures on the internet, but likely in copyright.
As to disambiguation, there's also Quinto, Portugal. Peter Jackson (talk) 10:18, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Hoping you are well

I hope it's lack of internet, and nothing worse, keeping you away. I look for your edits with anticipation. Be well, Peter! Pat Palmer (talk) 19:34, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Yes, this time no advance warning. Just from today "nonessential" use allowed. Lots of other stuff to catch up on, so you won't see me much here for a few days. Peter Jackson (talk) 09:36, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
Peter, I am elated to hear from you! We'll be happy to have you back when it's convenient.Pat Palmer (talk) 15:53, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

Write-a-Thon this weekend

This Sunday, we're getting together on the wiki for the first time in a decade to create and edit articles loosely themed on planets, stars, galaxies and cosmic entities - or anything that involves words like those! For more information, see What's a Write-a-thon? etc. Hope to see you there! John Stephenson (talk) 16:34, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

What_is_language?

I moved this article to include a question mark at the end, thanks to your helpful comment. I also removed the Authors template, as I welcome collaboration on the article. So hack away at it if you wish.Pat Palmer (talk) 15:12, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

American Civil War

I agree with your comments; it needs some cleanup. Once we manage to deal with the server migration, I will try to revisit the whole "Ready for Reading" list and get that article updated or maybe off the Ready list.Pat Palmer (talk) 02:54, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Welcome back!

Peter, I missed you! Welcome back to the upgraded wiki, where all kinds of links are suspect but things mostly limp along. Over time we hope to fix a lot of it. And it's still quite possible to write in here. Please try again to confirm your email by going into Preferences and scrolling down. That way, people will be able to message you. Also, maybe it's obvious, but please make tiny edits in your main efforts such as Pali Canon and Pali so they'll get on your shiny new Watchlist. Pat Palmer (talk) 18:07, 1 April 2022 (CDT)

Not necessary: we've got the same tab as WP for adding to watchlist (5-pointed star). Peter Jackson (talk) 04:11, 5 April 2022 (CDT)

Comment with colons?

Peter, Thanks for the helpful comments you leave on the wiki. Would you please try to start comments on Talk pages with colons? One colon for the first comment, two colons indent for a comment to a comment, and so on. So if you commenting on someone's comment which is already a 3 colons, you start yours with 4 colons. It would be more helpful to readers! Thanks. Pat Palmer (talk) 09:52, 6 December 2022 (CST)

One colon indents a comment like this. Pat Palmer (talk)
Two colons indent like this. Pat Palmer (talk)
I mostly do that, but if the comment is in some sense new rather than a reply to a previous one I may restart. Peter Jackson (talk) 04:32, 7 December 2022 (CST)

non-clickable EditTools

Peter, Are you still experiencing this problem? When I edit, I see some formatting tools above the edit pane which will enter wiki markdown for me when I click them. Does this not work for you? If not, please let me know what kind of browser and OS you are using. Or is the problem something else entirely?Pat Palmer (talk) 14:01, 21 December 2022 (CST)

Didn't look at those. I see there's some sort of table facility, which might be easier than the usual way of doing wikitables. But there's only a limited selection of special characters there. The EditTools panel below the edit window is still non-clickable, & that's where most of the special characters & wikimarkup are to be found. I know I'm using Firefox, as you recommended to bypass some security alerts. If you can tell me how to find any other information you need about the library computer system, let me know. Peter Jackson (talk) 05:27, 22 December 2022 (CST)
Wow. I never even noticed the "Special Characters" pane below. Was that formerly clickable? One now must use copy (ctrl-C) and paste (ctrl-V). I always had to look those things up at great pains (and now by Googling). You've just made my day. It looks like those might be from a template and I doubt I'll know enough to make them clickable, but I will look into it. Funny how one can't see the trees for the forest sometimes.Pat Palmer (talk) 07:20, 22 December 2022 (CST)
And now I see that "Special characters" are available for entry via the formatting tools above the edit pane. Clicking "Advanced" there also gives you an extra line of tools. Now that I've found them, these are useful. But, are the ones needed for Pali (and Sanskit) there? Pat Palmer (talk) 09:23, 22 December 2022 (CST)
Some of them are in that upper bar. The lower panel includes all but ṅ. Peter Jackson (talk) 05:15, 23 December 2022 (CST)
I remember the non-clickability problem sometimes happened on Wikinfo. Maybe User:Fred Bauder might have some ideas on the technical issues. Peter Jackson (talk) 05:28, 23 December 2022 (CST)
That also applies to the other problem, where the system keeps logging people out for no good reason. Peter Jackson (talk) 05:36, 24 December 2022 (CST)

requesting your help, opinions, ideas, suggestions

Peter, I have worked on a section of an article about the small town in Tennessee where I grew up. See Paris,_Tennessee#Racial_desegregation_since_1960. The source for some of that information is me, directly, acting I guess as a Topic Informant, and it is not even proper for me to give myself as a source. Nevertheless, I have done this at least temporarily because I strongly feel that the history of racial segregation has been sanitized from places in Wikipedia (and Citizendium). Yes, we have general sources about racism in general, but no specific town ever likes to include its own past. So I've tried to do it. Also in Paris,_Tennessee#After_the_Civil_War_(1870_-_1930). I've tried to use my personal contacts "back home" to get someone else from my hometown to write on this article, but so far, everyone is either not interested or unwilling to go public with their real name. It's easier for me since I now live far away from there. Anyway, do you have an ideas about how I can document this information in a way that someone (probably not me) can rewrite the article a refer to it? I don't think this is what we would call self promotion per se, but it is definitely maybe "original research" and a conflict of interest. And yet, it needs to be documented. I don't know whom else to ask right now. You are a senior person around here and maybe you can give me some ideas. Pat Palmer (talk) 14:42, 11 March 2023 (CST)

Not sure what to suggest here. There's probably a lot of useful information buried in local newspapers, but I've no idea how easily searchable they would be. Peter Jackson (talk) 05:23, 13 March 2023 (CDT)
That is a good idea. Pat Palmer (talk) 14:55, 13 March 2023 (CDT)
Sometimes you can read between the lines. Sometimes what people don't say is noticeable. How to use that sort of thing in an article could be a problem. Sometimes describing the situation, including blanks, might be enough.
Beyond that, I imagine I'm not likely to be better placed than you too track down local historical studies. Peter Jackson (talk) 06:00, 14 March 2023 (CDT)
Have you tried googling paris tennessee bibliography? Peter Jackson (talk) 06:02, 16 March 2023 (CDT)
Just tried googling pali canon bibliography. Apart from sponsored entries, top of the list is the subpage right here. Hm. Peter Jackson (talk) 06:58, 17 March 2023 (CDT)

About your message

I assume he means Assange and WikiLeaks. I'll leave a note on his page. Pat Palmer (talk) 07:40, 28 July 2023 (CDT)
Peter, I have private messaged the author about the White hole article. It cannot be posted by him, but another contributor such as I could post it for him. I'd like to know whether he intends to contribute to the wiki in other places, or whether his only intention was to post this article and leave. We'll see. Either way, this article as it now stands will have to be deleted shortly. Pat Palmer (talk) 08:49, 28 July 2023 (CDT)
And, I deleted and recreated the White hole article myself. Y.I. is going on to edit other articles. Thanks for noticing this! Pat Palmer (talk) 09:37, 28 July 2023 (CDT)

U.S. Constitution date

The U.S. Constitution did not go into effect until 1789, when the Articles of Confederation expired, although the Constitution was written in 1787 and ratified in 1788. So 1789 is usually the year when we consider that the U.S. got it's actual, legal start. Pat Palmer (talk) 09:33, 31 July 2023 (CDT)

Donald Trump article

Peter, I very much appreciate your efforts to keep Donald Trump up to date and accurate. I just moved your passage about the 14th amendment over to the section on "Running again", which I've retitled "Running again, or trying to", and I went at my edits haphazardly and failed to comment my actions correctly. Just wanted to let you know that I didn't delete your statements but only moved them, and added a bunch of details (possibly too many). Anyway, it really helps that you are watching the article also for accuracy. The legal landscape for Trump is constantly changing these days. Pat Palmer (talk) 12:43, 23 December 2023 (CST)

"Oh, you thought I was using this phrase as used against Jews for hundreds of years, in Imperial Russia? No, no, no, I was using it as used by a different kind of racist in 13th Century Ireland."

I'd always THOUGHT the phrase was solely anti-semitic, before I looked it up.

A young friend of mine was shocked when he used the term "gyp" -- a term occasionally used around here to assert someone is financially cheating you. I told him the term originally was used by anti-Roma racists, because the Roma's colloquial term is "gypsy", and it implies all Roma - gypsies - are cheaters.
