Mark Irwin is associate professor at the Faculty of Literature & Social Sciences in Yamagata
University, northern Japan. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1989 with a BA in
Modern & Mediaeval Languages and subsequently went on to gain an MA in Advanced
Japanese Studies from Sheffield University and then a PhD in Japanese historical linguistics
from the same. His current research encompasses Japanese historical linguistics, more
specifically historical phonology and morphology, as well as Japanese sociolinguistics and
sociohistorical linguistics. He has also dabbled in the Sinoxenic, the study of those non-
Chinese East Asian languages that borrowed both sinography and a large number of Chinese
loanwords.
