André Silva Barreto, Marine Biologist, Master’s and PhD.degree in Biological Oceanography (University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, RS, Brazil).
Area of Expertise: Biology of Marine Mammals; Taxonomy of Cetaceans (whales and dolphins)
Personal comments: Even though I’ve specialized in the area of marine mammals, I consider myself a generalist. Since the many different aspects of marine mammals research involve social interactions, underwater vocalizations, hydrodynamics, migrations and many more areas, I need to know a bit of almost every field of biology and also go into chemistry and physics.
Projects underway: Interaction of dolphins with artisanal fisheries, Monitoring dolphins in the Itajaí River estuary, On-line system for managing cetacean sightings.
Professional Activities Professor in the undergraduate course on Nectology (Oceanography); Coordinator of Honour’s degrees in the Biotechnology undergraduate course; Professor of the graduate course of Scientific Methodology for Master’s Course on Environmental Science and Technology Member of the Working Group on Aquatic Mammals, IBAMA (Brazilian Environmental Agency).
