CZ:Romanization/Arabic
The is a draft recommendation on how to romanize Modern Arabic words and names within Citizendium. It is not official Citizendium policy. You may edit this as you would any other page within this site. Discussion of the issues should take place on the Talk page.
Arabic is something of a special case, as it contains sounds not used in English, and the pronunciation varies widely from Marrakech to Dubai.
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known as Fusha, is something akin to the BBC pronunciation of Arabic, although it seems that the differences between MSA and the regional dialects can be pretty stark. The pronunciation also varies depending on the region, so there may be a "proper" (MSA) way to say (for instance) a place-name, and also the local pronunciation of that place-name.
