Oversight and new legislation for the military is the responsibility, in the Senate, of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC)'. Carl Levin (D-Michigan) is the chairman and John McCain (R-Arizona) is the ranking minority member.

It has six functional subcommittees; the membership is changing in October 2009 as a result of a death and resignation, and the appointment of new members.
