In medicine, respiratory tract infections include any infection of the respiratory tract. Examples include pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia.
Common organisms causing the infections include influenza.
Diagnosis
The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved xTAG™ Respiratory Viral Panel (RVP) for detecting viral causes.[1]
Treatment
Upper respiratory tract infections
Regarding over-the-counter (OTC) medications, "there is no good evidence for or against the effectiveness of OTC medicines in acute cough" according to a systematic review by the Cochrane Collaboration.[2]
