The AN/PRC-148 Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (MBITR), which covers the HF through VHF spectrum, is the first widely defined military software-defined radio. It preceded the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), although the AN/PRC-148 JEM version is JTRS compatible.

Physically, the basic version is handheld, but can be plugged into vehicle or base station mounts that give greater power.

Electronically, it covers the 30-512 MHz frequency range, is compatible with SINCGARS ground and HAVE QUICK II air tactical communications, and includes built-in encryption. It has low-speed data transmission capability,
