The okina (Hawaiian: ʻokina) is a symbol used in Hawaiian and other languages to indicate the sound of the glottal stop. It resembles an inverted comma used for opening speech, and should not be confused with the apostrophe, which is the same symbol upside down (like the inverted comma closing speech).
