An outdoor sport played, generally on grass, by two teams of eleven players each including goalkeepers. Players hit the ball with the curved face of a stick and the object of the game is to score the most goals. In most of the world, field hockey is simply called "hockey". The world governing body is the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (International Hockey Federation; FIH) which was founded on 7 January 1924 and has its headquarters in Lausanne with more than 135 national associations as members.
