Belfast Agreement [r]: The Agreement, signed in 1998, between the governments of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland relating to on-going conflict in Northern Ireland. While the Agreement, also known as the 'Good Friday Agreement', was an internationally binding document, it does not contain law. Rather it contains the 'spirit' of law and the intent of the signatories and the parties involved in negotiations. Legislation in both the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom was created subsequently, based on the Agreement. [e]
