The word swashbuckler has two main (and related) meanings, based on its original meaning as a person who used a sword and buckler, creating rather a noisy swordfighting style.

In the modern sense, a swashbuckler is either an adventurous, chivalrous, romantic hero, or a genre in literature, film and theatre, based on that archetype.
