splitting Java platform out from the programming language

I'm dividing this into two articles, Java_platform and Java_programming_language.Pat Palmer 21:05, 27 August 2007 (CDT)

Java terminology

I'd also think that the Java platform article would serve to cover all the different aspects of Java as an overview. Then the specific pieces of Java would be covered in detail either in sections or as separate articles. So in essence there would be:

  • Java platform, describing the platform as a whole. Servlets and applets could be covered here too possibly
    • Java programming language, describing the programming language in detail
    • Java Development Kit, describing the Java bytecode compiler
    • Java Runtime Environment, describing the end-user runtime environment that is distributed
I don't know who made the above comment (it's unsigned); however, I'm unlinking JDK and JRE, as I don't think we should encourage people to start articles about them here. They are well documented on the Java distribution sites, and their contents change regularly with new releases.Pat Palmer 05:10, 8 June 2007 (CDT)

List items in flux; beg patience

I'm leaving this article in some disarray; I've brought in some old notes and am integrating them but I haven't finished yet. I intend to finish smoothing the list items into the text (and removing duplicate parts) very soon, so please bear with me before anyone starts pointing out how disorganized it is at present. I'll announce here when I think it's ready for other eyes.Pat Palmer 12:03, 9 June 2007 (CDT)

mascot archived at least temporarily

Duke, the Java mascot

I've moved the reference to the mascot here for the time being. The article has become very long, and I'm not sure where the mascot should go (yet).Pat Palmer 14:34, 26 August 2007 (CDT)
