Richard Scarry (June 5, 1919 - April 30, 1994) was an enormously popular author and illustrator of children's books. At the time of his death in 1994, it was estimated that some 100 million Scarry books had been sold in the United States and abroad, including 8 of the top 50 best-selling hardcover children's titles of all time.[1] Scarry entered the spotlight with Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever in 1963 and enjoyed continuing success with his Busytown series. He is known for the great detail that he included in his illustrations in a conscious effort to engage young minds.
