Not sure where this fits...
I'm reminded that simply because an antibiotic is old, it may be critical to have available, especially when it had not been used in certain populations long enough that resistance may have been selected out of the bacterial population. While sulfadiazine is now available, according to Medscape drug reference, production stopped in 1992-1993, and CDC had to step in and provide emergency supplies, much as it does for drugs for tropical diseases that are not commercially available (i.e., viable) in the U.S. MMWR from 1993: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8429812
