Pope John II, original name Mercurius (born 533-died 535), was a 6th-century pope. He is particularly noteworthy because he is the first pope to take a regnal name instead of his given name. In the case of John II, he chose to take a regnal name because his given name, Mercurius, was the name of a pagan god.
