The United States Department of Defense is a Department of the United States Government. The United States Secretary of Defense is the holder of a cabinet portfolio. The Secretary is responsible for four armed services, the United States Navy; the United States Army; the United States Air Force; and the United States Marine Corp.

Prior to World War 2 the Department was known as the War Department, and the Secretary was known as the Secretary of War.
