Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It forms an autonomous region (Regione Siciliana) of Italy and is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina. The capital is Palermo and other famous sites include the ancient city-states of Agrigentum, Gela, and Syracuse. The highest peak is Mount Etna (c. 11,000 feet), a noted volcano.
