A midcareer educational institution of the United States Army, the Command and General Staff College, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, prepares officers for planning and leadership at the level of operational art: brigade through corps level. It is accredited to award masters' degrees.

The typical student is an Army major, although there are students from other U.S. military services, government civilians in the national security area, and foreign military officers. In practice, graduation from CGSC is a requirement for promotion to colonel and above.

While it is best known for the resident program, there is a distance learning program. The School of Advanced Military Studies offers an additional honors program following the CGSC course.
