Connecticut is one the states of the United States of America; it lies in the northeastern corner of the US, as one of the six New England states. Connecticut was admitted to the Union on January 9, 1788, as the 5th state. Its area is 5,018 square miles (12,997 square kilometers), and its estimated population is 3,501,252 (2008). It borders to Massachusetts on the north, Rhode Island on the east, Long Island Sound (an arm of the Atlantic Ocean) on the south, and New York on the west. Hartford is the capital of Connecticut.

The University of Connecticut has a main campus in Storrs and branches in Groton, Hartford, Stamford, Torrington, and Waterbury. The university started in 1881 as an Agricultural School and after some name changes, it became the University of Connecticut in 1939.
