Anna Maria Geertruida Schmidt (Kapelle, May 20 1911 - Amsterdam, May 21 1988), was a dutch poet and writer[1]. Amongst her works are poems, songs, plays, musicals and radio-television drama, although she is most known because of her work in children's literature achieving the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1988.[2] She died through euthanasia in 1994, the morning after her 84th birthday.[3]
Early Life
Annie M.G. Schmidt was born in a family that lost two little girls before her, both of them were bearing her name. Because of that, her mother was constantly worried about her safety and dedicated much time to her. Being a retired teacher, she learned her daughter to read at an early age.
