Alternative usage
The template has two forms depending on what pages are missing:
- Appearance 1 text will appear on any page that has an article page but no associated metadata page.
- Appearance 2 text will appear on a page with no associated metadata page or article page (orphaned subpages).
Appearance 1
- The text below will appear on any page that has an article page but no associated metadata page.
You may see this box for one of two reasons. Either:
- A - New page has been created
- B - Cluster move is in progress
For a New Cluster use the following directions
Subpages format requires a metadata page.
Using the following instructions will complete the process of creating this article's subpages.
- Click the blue "metadata template" link below to create the page.
- On the edit page that appears paste in the article's title across from "
pagename = ".
- You might also fill out the checklist part of the form. Ignore the rest.
- For background, see Using the Subpages template Don't worry--you'll get the hang of it right away.
- Remember to hit Save!
the "metadata template".
However, you can create articles without subpages. Just delete the {{subpages}} template from the top of this page and this prompt will disappear. :) Don't feel obligated to use subpages, it's more important that you write sentences, which you can always do without writing fancy code.
For a Cluster Move use the following directions
The metadata template needs to be moved to the new name. It can be found at the following link.

Appearance 2
- The text below will appear on a page with no associated metadata page or article page (orphaned subpages). This is transcluded from the template {{Orphan subpage}}.
This is an Orphan subpage. Details:
|
A - New page created
If you are in the process of starting a new cluster then:
- The following links will be useful:
|
B- Orphaned subpage
If you found this page by following a hyperlink to this page, you may have found an orphaned subpage or metadata page.
- What next?
- If this is a subpage:
- a) with content:
- Someone may have created subpage content without an article.
- A page may have been moved to a new location and this page may have been accidently left behind.
- The former article might have existed at "No metadata template".
- Or it was created as a stand alone subpage and never had an associated article or metadata page.
- Consider if there is a home to merge the data to or consider starting a cluster around this content.
- b) without content:
- As this page is not associated with any article it should probably be deleted.
- If the article name includes a slash:
- A slash (/) in a title is not compatible with the CZ subpages format.
- Make this page into a redirect to a more appropriate name. For an example, see Linux.

C- For a Cluster Move
- The metadata template needs to be moved to the new name. It, or clues to its location can be found at the following link.
- If this is the new metadata template the pagename field has been updated too soon. Change back to the old name and continue guided by the semiautomated Cluster Move Information box.
