Ceres is a dwarf planet, the only one in the asteroid belt. It was classified as such when this new category was created by the IAU in 2006. When it was discovered on the first day of the 19th century, Ceres was classified as a planet, albeit a strangely small one; after the discovery of 2 Pallas, 3 Juno, 4 Vesta and other small bodies with similar orbits, it was reclassified as the largest asteroid, and it remains '1 Ceres'.
