Cheers!
Hey Bruce, cheers for the heads-up on the romanisation topic on the forums. :) I see you're a poet and author...cool! I love to write, but I'm not sure my writings pass muster.--Yim Kai-mun 02:01, 8 April 2007 (CDT)
Caliphate
My Oxford Dictionary gives the form without the 'h' too, but Wikipedia spells it with an 'h' in its articles on both Caliph & Caliphate, so it's probably just an alternative transcription. Unfortunately there's so far no Arabic at CZ:International. Ro Thorpe 10:46, 25 February 2008 (CST)
Of course I only noticed the final ‘h’ – I blame the pesky italics… I googled around a bit, and it would seem that 'khilafah' is indeed the –ate version, as you suggested. As for which page to use, I think it’s better to use the addressee’s talk page, as it announces ‘you have new messages’. Nice talking to you - Ro Thorpe 16:45, 25 February 2008 (CST)
Gonzales
Check out Gonzales now. I think I fixed it by editing the page. Sometimes the categories do not take after the metadata pages is changed until a minor edit to the article page helps resolves the categories. I'm not sure why that is the case. Chris Day 13:17, 5 May 2008 (CDT)
- Bruce, nice job slogging through all those abc changes. Chris Day 17:14, 5 May 2008 (CDT)
Townes Van Zandt
As a poet, I am sure you would love some of the lyrics of Townes Van Zandt. He was much more a poet and not such a good singer. Check out some lyrics on the web. The likes of Willy Nelson, John Prime, Lyle Lovett, EmmyLou Harris and many others have covered his tunes.
Look for these lyrics for a few good samples:
- Flyin' Shoes (covered by Lyle Lovett, who sang it at Townes' funeral)
- Tecumseh Valley (crushing dispare)
- Pancho and Lefty (made famous by Willie Nelson)
- When He Offers His Hand (Gospel)
- White Freight Liner Blues
- No Place to Fall (wife and I love to play this one)
- If I Needed You (covered by several people)
Here's Maria, really depressing:
- Artist: Townes Van Zandt
- Album: No Deeper Blue
- By townes van zandt
- I stood in line and left my name
- Took about six hours or so
- Well, the man just grinned like it was all a game
- Said they'd let me know
- I put in my time till the pocono line
- Shut down two years ago
- I was staying at the mission till I met marie
- Now I can't stay there no more
- Fella 'cross town said he's lookin' for a man
- To move some old cars around
- Maybe me and marie could find a burned-out
- Van and do a little settlin' down
- Aw, but I'm just dreamin', I ain't got no ride
- And the junkyard's a pretty good ways
- That job's about a half week old besides
- It'd be gone now anyway
- Unemployment said I got no more checks
- And they showed me to the hall
- My brother died in georgia some time ago
- I got no one left to call
- Summer wasn't bad below the bridge
- A little short on food that's all
- Now I gotta get marie some kind of coat
- We're headed down into fall
- I used to play the mouth harp pretty good
- Hustled up a little dough
- But I got drunk and I woke up rolled
- A couple of months ago
- They got my harp and they got my dollar
- Them low life so and so's
- Harps cost money and I ain't got it
- It's my own fault I suppose
- The pocono's down but the chesapeak's runnin'
- Two freights everyday
- If it was just me I'd be headed south
- But marie can't catch no train
- She's got some pain and she thinks it's a baby
- Says we gotta wait and see
- In my heart I know it's a little boy
- Hope he don't end up like me
- Well, the man's still grinnin' says he lost my file
- I gotta stand in line again
- I want to kill him but I just say no
- I had enough of that line my friend
- I head back to the bridge, its getting kinda cold
- I'm feelin' too low down to lie
- I guess I'll just tell marie the truth
- Hope she don't break down and cry
- Marie she didn't wake up this morning
- She didn't even try
- She just rolled over and went to heaven
- My little boy safe inside
- I laid them in the sun where somebody'd find them
- Caught a chesapeak on the fly
- Marie will know I'm headed south
- So's to meet me by and by
- Marie will know I'm headed south
- So to meet me by and by
(It doesnt have quite the same feel without the music and tempo)

- I like to say that it is funny that no one expects George Clooney or John Wayne to have written the movie dialog, but the general public just assumes the singer or least his band, must have written the lyrics. David E. Volk 12:57, 7 May 2008 (CDT)
OK, what am I missing that you are fixing?
- -) Seriously, I'm apparently doing something wrong with formatting, but it looks as if you are either inserting or deleting a blank line...I think. Howard C. Berkowitz 13:41, 7 May 2008 (CDT)
Bible books
Might be good to put them at Genesis (Bible book), etc as they are probably ambiguous in many (most? all?) cases. J. Noel Chiappa 11:07, 6 June 2008 (CDT)
- Ooops, sorry - that'll teach me to check the history!
- As to move and delete: for delete, that has to be done by a CZ:Constable - see CZ:Article Deletion Policy for more. For moving - that's complex, I'm writing a page on how to do it, I'll let you know when it's done.
- In general, check CZ:How To if you have this kind of question. J. Noel Chiappa 11:36, 6 June 2008 (CDT)
Dealing with duplicates
Hi, sorry I've been a bit slow responding to this - things have been crazy. Anyway...
I haven't actually cleared up many duplicate articles. Mostly what I've done is flagged a bunch of them. The thing is that dealing with a duplicate involves three steps:
- Deciding what the preferable title is
- Working out which article has the best content (i.e. should be saved as 'the' article on that topic)
- Seeing if there's any useful material to be salvaged from the other one, and doing the salvage
All of those really kind of need someone with expertise in that area. Plus to which it's a lot of work, and I'm lazy! So generally I just note it, and let the relevant editors deal with it (or ignore the situation, a common result).
As to what to do when you find a pair: what I've been doing (this is not policy - yet - just my take) is drop a note on each one's talk page, tagged with the template {{Duplicate}} (which takes as an argument the name of the other duplicate article). That adds them to Category:Duplicate articles, so they don't get lost, and lets the editors know they need to clean things up (see above). J. Noel Chiappa 15:22, 7 June 2008 (CDT)
Element name spellings
Whoops! Um yeah, let's go with the EB spelling. I'll just go ahead and move the pages over :-)--David Yamakuchi 13:52, 18 June 2008 (CDT)
Ummm...yes. Confuse the Russians, confuse Congress.
Nahh...Congress does a good enough job confusing itself.
Thanks. I'll go fix it. Howard C. Berkowitz 14:44, 26 June 2008 (CDT)

Bruce, nice to "meet" you here in CZ, and thanks for the encouragement on Grounds of Sculpture; I especially enjoyed the teenager anecdote!Pat Palmer 09:20, 11 August 2008 (CDT)
Covers
In music, covers refers to "covering" someone elses music, ie one band/singer plays the music of another band. In general, music clubs pay a flat fee per year which allows them to play all ASCAP music, for example, and also a separate fee to the other company, but I can't think of their name at the moment. The fee is based on the size of the venue, and they don't keep track of each song played. Cover charge is still the term used when you pay $40 to hear a band play all original music too. It does work out to be the same thing as a dinner cover I suppose.
Speaking of music, I just spent the last few days at Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. You should check out the Band of Heathens on the web. The band has 3 singer-songerwriters, a base player and a drummer. They are one of Austin's best bands right now. David E. Volk 00:54, 22 August 2008 (CDT)
Flexner something
Thanks for spotting that. I believe "Report" was the title of the document, and is in generally more common usage. The article itself needs some cleanup, as well as wikilinking to several related areas. Did you just spot the duplicate in passing, or is this subject of special interest? I have some additional materials here, although I think my biography of Osler is packed away. Howard C. Berkowitz 23:15, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Greek letters
Thanks for consulting me. Yes, I think you have it covered. I always look at WP to see how it manages these technicalities, and they have a disambiguation page for the 5 or so Greek letters I looked up, so that should be the way to proceed: Gamma (letter). Ro Thorpe 01:03, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Why do you need 'Greek' before 'letter'? 'Tis a lot of work. Do other alphabets have gamma? Ro Thorpe 00:56, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
OK, we'll see if anyone else comments... Ro Thorpe 16:20, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
- Bruce, I believe you should leave the "Greek" in. There will be readers who may not be familiar with any foreign letters and who will wonder where in the world the letters came from. After all, this is an encyclopedia and we should educate those readers.
- As I wrote in the forum, I think the letters look much better if the LaTeX math letters are used. I revised the Gamma (disambiguation) page to use them ... what do you think? Milton Beychok 16:58, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Theta in Henry's Law
Bruce, I think you should just go ahead and define Theta as a Greek letter. I have changed the wording in that sentence in Henry's Law to delete the word "standard". There is no longer any universally accepted standard temperature and/or pressure ... as I've documented in Reference conditons of gas temperature and pressure. 298 K just happens to be the temperature at which a good bit of thermodynamic data appears to have been published at one time ... but it is not a universally accepted standard temperature. Thanks for contacting me about this. Milton Beychok 23:16, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Greek letters
Hi Bruce, thanks for your message, and once you are at disambiguations, please also take a look at CZ:List of words with multiple uses. Thanks! --Daniel Mietchen 21:30, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for consulting me. I don't mind how you do it, but these instances always send me to Wikipedia, and there the main article is about the mark, with a top-of-page link to disambiguation, where one finds the figure of speech and the Zappa album, which, for old times' sake, I must now read... Ro Thorpe 00:38, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I had a feeling I had missed something there, and that was a most interesting & indeed enlightening essay. I had no idea the Brits were subject to punctuation rationing. Perhaps I was born too late, in 1950, but I think I was already quite old, say 8 or 9, when I noticed that some publishers left out the stop after Mr & Mrs & Dr. Certainly in primary school we were instructed to expend the lead in our pencils, no matter how much it cost, on putting dots after docs. Ro Thorpe 00:54, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Toys"R"Irrelevant
Quite so, gives me an excuse to remove the advertising, thanks. I wonder whether they changed it, or I wrote that when I was beginning to need glasses... Ro Thorpe 19:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Opening
I like your title, I left the other there since it already existed at Chess/Related Articles. However, there is a see of red links there so there is no problem going with your naming convention, as far as I'm aware. Chris Day 21:25, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- My mistake, possibly he started other articles too? If I were you I would do what you think is best. I dumped a whole load of ideas on the chess related articles page and was going to try and sort them into an overall theme/hierarchy. But don't be guided by the examples you see there. Go your own way. Chris Day 21:41, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Sandbox
Hi Bruce, i saw your note on milts page. You can start any page in your user space as a sandbox. milt often starts writing his articles there before putting them into the main space. For example you could start User:Bruce M.Tindall/Sandbox or even User:Bruce M.Tindall/Article name. If you forget what you have created it is no problem. You can find then easily using the prefix special page and search for you name. All your user subpages will be found that way. Test with my user name and you will see I have created a lot of different ones. Chris Day 23:00, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Just created a sandbox for you
Bruce, there is a hyperlink to your personal sandbox in the lefthand, upper corner of your user page. All you have to do is click on it. Enjoy!
Users can make sandboxes themselves or any one else can do it for them (as I just did at your request). Milton Beychok 23:34, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
JFK article
Hi Bruce,
Did you put a Speedy Delete on the JFK related article? It shows up in the Speedy Delete page but I can't find a template anywhere. Hayford Peirce 19:04, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
How do you make a move (or rename)?
Bruce, I see that you recently moved or renamed a Rodgers and Hammerstein article. I am trying to learn how to make article moves. Can you tell me the correct order of moving the metadata page, all the subpages and the main article? What do must I do first? Second? Third? etc. Milton Beychok 01:15, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Bruce,
For your information. D. Matt Innis 01:58, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Haha, you were already there! D. Matt Innis 02:02, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Enforcing conventions
I'd really appreciate your asking on the talk page before enforcing a singular not plural convention. In a number of cases, things are plural because the emphasis is on classes, not individual members of a class. This is not a simple change of grammatical number. "Nodes", for example, is a class of devices on computer networks, encompassing routers and hosts. For the singular, it would be more common to refer to a "host node" or "router node".
In other cases, as in pharmacology, the term "agents" is used to refer to a class; this is consistent with the National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings usage. Howard C. Berkowitz 19:40, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Transportation articles
In general, I think we've been using Engineering. That's been adequate for an exemplar of the technology, such as the Boeing 737 or DC-3 (airliner). For militarily significant highways, however, I've considered Geography to be the first group but also Military and sometimes History; that would probably fit mass transit (Geography & Engineering). Howard C. Berkowitz 22:57, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
