Based on the model of the colleges of Oxford University and Cambridge University, the Claremont Colleges are a consortium of undergraduate and graduate institutions. They are on adjacent campuses in Claremont, California (U.S. state), 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
Pomona College was the first established, in 1887. The consortium model was chosen in the 1920s, as opposed to that of large American universities. Claremont McKenna College is the most recent, formed in 1946 and specializing in economics, government, and public affairs.
