Honolulu, Hawaii is the largest city on the Pacific island of Oʻahu in Hawaii, and is the state's capital. Honolulu has been the capital of the Hawaiian Islands since 1845, first of the independent Hawaiian Kingdom, after 1898 of the U.S. territory, and since 1959 of the U.S. state of Hawaii.
The city is known for its vicinity to the site of the battle of Pearl Harbor, a site which remains a major U.S. naval base hosting the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
