The United States Sentencing Commission is an independent agency in the United States Judiciary created by Congress. The Commission is charged with establishing guidelines for the sentencing of criminal defendants in the United States Courts. In addition, the Commission sets policies addressing the appropriate form and severity of punishment for those convicted of federal crimes.
