Barry Morris Goldwater (1909-1998) was an American politician from Arizona who was instrumental in shaping the modern conservative movement in the United States. He served as a U.S. Senator from 1953 to 1965 and from 1969 to 1987 as a member of the Republican Party, and unsuccessfully ran for president in 1964 against incumbent Lyndon Johnson. Throughout of his career, Goldwater was a staunch advocate of fiscal conservatism, states' rights and hawkish stance against communism both domestically and internationally.
