My Technical Skills
I began using computers when I was about 4 years old and by the time I started primary school I had my introduction to BASIC programming on the Amstrad CPC 464. Throughout my childhood and teenage years I gained some experience in programming Visual Basic, C++ and Java, however in adulthood I discovered that my main interest was with web development. I quickly because proficient in HTML and other basic web programming techniques such as CSS, but I wanted to make websites that actually do things. I taught myself PHP and SQL, as well as delving into some other areas such as javascript. I have created a couple of interactive websites, the main one being Neotrophies and also spent a year developing a management suite for a local callcentre which now handles all of their operations including customer management, data collection, report generation, invoicing and payroll.
My Technical Contributions at Citizendium
After setting up a clone of CZ on my personal machine, I began work on remedying some of the technical issues present in the software. I was later added to the Technical Staff, and later still given the editinterface right in order to implement changes. A list of bugs that I have fixed can be found here.
Significant modifications under development
- Creation of a proposal for the overhaul of the user rights system
Significant modifications implemented
- Design and implementation of the green approval bar on the Watchlist and RecentChanges pages (May 17, 2010)
- Testing and oversight of the AddThis widget (July 06, 2010)
- Development of an extension to simplify the creation and modification of metadata (22 August 2010)
My Gaming Experience
I have been playing computer games since the late eighties and have a varied experience in many games. From a young age I worked on programming games in the limited languages that were available to me at the time. Whilst none of my games have been published (as I lack the graphical skills mainly), I still occasionally work on these. I have read many books on games design and programming, and I keep up to date on several websites on the topic. I also keep up to date on upcoming games even if I do not intend to play them, as well as having a firm interest in older retro games. I am a member of the International Game Developers Association. I was a significant contributer to the Space Quest Omnipedia. I created the site Neotrophies (recently closed) for the online MMORPG Neopets which I played for many years. I have a specific interest in the game World of Warcraft. I have two top-level characters on the game, and a strong understanding about the mechanics behind the game. I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and have completed games from VII onwards several times. I have a good understanding of the earlier games although I have not yet played them.
Outside of the world of video games I regularly play a wide variety of other games. Board games are a regular feature in our household, and I play or have played a variety of trading card games at various levels up to and including regional tournament in one particular game. For many years I played a variety of pen and paper role-playing games including Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire the Masquerade and Star Wars RPG.
My Games Contributions at Citizendium
When I began contributing to Citizendium there was almost no activity in the Games Workgroup. I attempted (with limited success) to encourage work to be done on these articles, and it soon became clear that a significant portion of the workgroup's authors were particularly interested in video games. To this end I created the Video Games Subgroup, and began concentrating my efforts in this direction. Progress is slow, but we have created a infobox to be added to all articles about specific games, developed an outline list of video game genres in order to classify games, and begun developing a list of core video game articles. Since then I have also been made an Editor for the Games Workgroup, and we have finally achieved approval on some games articles.
Games articles I have significantly worked on
