My Gaming Experience

I have been playing computer games since the late eighties and have a varied experience in many games. From a young age I worked on programming games in the limited languages that were available to me at the time. Whilst none of my games have been published (as I lack the graphical skills mainly), I still occasionally work on these. I have read many books on games design and programming, and I keep up to date on several websites on the topic. I also keep up to date on upcoming games even if I do not intend to play them, as well as having a firm interest in older retro games. I am a member of the International Game Developers Association. I was a significant contributer to the Space Quest Omnipedia. I created the site Neotrophies (recently closed) for the online MMORPG Neopets which I played for many years. I have a specific interest in the game World of Warcraft. I have two top-level characters on the game, and a strong understanding about the mechanics behind the game. I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and have completed games from VII onwards several times. I have a good understanding of the earlier games although I have not yet played them.

Outside of the world of video games I regularly play a wide variety of other games. Board games are a regular feature in our household, and I play or have played a variety of trading card games at various levels up to and including regional tournament in one particular game. For many years I played a variety of pen and paper role-playing games including Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire the Masquerade and Star Wars RPG.

My Games Contributions at Citizendium

When I began contributing to Citizendium there was almost no activity in the Games Workgroup. I attempted (with limited success) to encourage work to be done on these articles, and it soon became clear that a significant portion of the workgroup's authors were particularly interested in video games. To this end I created the Video Games Subgroup, and began concentrating my efforts in this direction. Progress is slow, but we have created a infobox to be added to all articles about specific games, developed an outline list of video game genres in order to classify games, and begun developing a list of core video game articles. Since then I have also been made an Editor for the Games Workgroup, and we have finally achieved approval on some games articles.

  • Developing Article Bubble Bobble: A platform video game developed by Taito that was originally released in 1986 as an arcade machine, but has since been ported to a large number of systems. [e]
  • Developing Article Dizzy (series): A series of video games initially created by The Oliver Twins and published in Europe by Codemasters between 1986 and 1993. [e]
  • Approved Article Doom (video game): A first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and released in 1993 that changed standards for interactive entertainment and came to define the emerging FPS genre for years after its release. [e]
  • Developed Article Duke Nukem (video game): A platform game developed and published by Apogee Software, which is the first in the series of Duke Nukem games and was released on 1st July 1991. [e]
  • Approved Article Jet Set Willy: Platform game created by Matthew Smith and originally released in 1984 for the ZX Spectrum. [e]
