Ingmar Bergman (IPA: /ˈɪŋmar ˈbærjman/) (July 14, 1918 – July 30, 2007) was a Swedish film and theatre director, often called one of the greatest film-makers ever.

His films (e.g. The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet, 1957), Wild Strawberries (Smultronstället, 1957), Autumn Sonata (Höstsonaten, 1978) et al.) cover moral, philosophical or religious questions. The world of Bergman's films is often that of despair, anguish and personal conflicts.

Bergman's autobiographic book The Magic Lantern (Laterna Magica, 1987) is a candid account of his childhood and later development.

Bergman was married 5 times: with Else Fisher, Ellen Lundström, Gun Grut, Käbi Laretei and Ingrid von Rosen.
