The Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska) is a Mediterranean country in the north-western part of the Balkans. Its capital is Zagreb. Croatia borders Slovenia and Hungary to the north, Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east, Montenegro to the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the west.

Croatia is a candidate for EU membership. Croatia officially became a NATO member on 1 April 2009.
