The Continental Army was the name given to the American army during the American Revolutionary War. The army was formed by the Second Continental Congress in June of 1775, under the command of George Washington, to unite the armies of the American colonies against the British. Following the war, most of the army was disbanded, and the remaining soldiers became the United States Army.
