Cheers!

Hey Bruce, cheers for the heads-up on the romanisation topic on the forums. :) I see you're a poet and author...cool! I love to write, but I'm not sure my writings pass muster.--Yim Kai-mun 02:01, 8 April 2007 (CDT)

Caliphate

My Oxford Dictionary gives the form without the 'h' too, but Wikipedia spells it with an 'h' in its articles on both Caliph & Caliphate, so it's probably just an alternative transcription. Unfortunately there's so far no Arabic at CZ:International. Ro Thorpe 10:46, 25 February 2008 (CST)

Of course I only noticed the final ‘h’ – I blame the pesky italics… I googled around a bit, and it would seem that 'khilafah' is indeed the –ate version, as you suggested. As for which page to use, I think it’s better to use the addressee’s talk page, as it announces ‘you have new messages’. Nice talking to you - Ro Thorpe 16:45, 25 February 2008 (CST)

Gonzales

Check out Gonzales now. I think I fixed it by editing the page. Sometimes the categories do not take after the metadata pages is changed until a minor edit to the article page helps resolves the categories. I'm not sure why that is the case. Chris Day 13:17, 5 May 2008 (CDT)

Bruce, nice job slogging through all those abc changes. Chris Day 17:14, 5 May 2008 (CDT)

Townes Van Zandt

As a poet, I am sure you would love some of the lyrics of Townes Van Zandt. He was much more a poet and not such a good singer. Check out some lyrics on the web. The likes of Willy Nelson, John Prime, Lyle Lovett, EmmyLou Harris and many others have covered his tunes.

Look for these lyrics for a few good samples:

  • Flyin' Shoes (covered by Lyle Lovett, who sang it at Townes' funeral)
  • Tecumseh Valley (crushing dispare)
  • Pancho and Lefty (made famous by Willie Nelson)
  • When He Offers His Hand (Gospel)
  • White Freight Liner Blues
  • No Place to Fall (wife and I love to play this one)
  • If I Needed You (covered by several people)

Here's Maria, really depressing:

  • Artist: Townes Van Zandt
  • Album: No Deeper Blue
  • By townes van zandt
  • I stood in line and left my name
  • Took about six hours or so
  • Well, the man just grinned like it was all a game
  • Said they'd let me know
  • I put in my time till the pocono line
  • Shut down two years ago
  • I was staying at the mission till I met marie
  • Now I can't stay there no more
  • Fella 'cross town said he's lookin' for a man
  • To move some old cars around
  • Maybe me and marie could find a burned-out
  • Van and do a little settlin' down
  • Aw, but I'm just dreamin', I ain't got no ride
  • And the junkyard's a pretty good ways
  • That job's about a half week old besides
  • It'd be gone now anyway
  • Unemployment said I got no more checks
  • And they showed me to the hall
  • My brother died in georgia some time ago
  • I got no one left to call
  • Summer wasn't bad below the bridge
  • A little short on food that's all
  • Now I gotta get marie some kind of coat
  • We're headed down into fall
  • I used to play the mouth harp pretty good
  • Hustled up a little dough
  • But I got drunk and I woke up rolled
  • A couple of months ago
  • They got my harp and they got my dollar
  • Them low life so and so's
  • Harps cost money and I ain't got it
  • It's my own fault I suppose
  • The pocono's down but the chesapeak's runnin'
  • Two freights everyday
  • If it was just me I'd be headed south
  • But marie can't catch no train
  • She's got some pain and she thinks it's a baby
  • Says we gotta wait and see
  • In my heart I know it's a little boy
  • Hope he don't end up like me
  • Well, the man's still grinnin' says he lost my file
  • I gotta stand in line again
  • I want to kill him but I just say no
  • I had enough of that line my friend
  • I head back to the bridge, its getting kinda cold
  • I'm feelin' too low down to lie
  • I guess I'll just tell marie the truth
  • Hope she don't break down and cry
  • Marie she didn't wake up this morning
  • She didn't even try
  • She just rolled over and went to heaven
  • My little boy safe inside
  • I laid them in the sun where somebody'd find them
  • Caught a chesapeak on the fly
  • Marie will know I'm headed south
  • So's to meet me by and by
  • Marie will know I'm headed south
  • So to meet me by and by

(It doesnt have quite the same feel without the music and tempo)

I like to say that it is funny that no one expects George Clooney or John Wayne to have written the movie dialog, but the general public just assumes the singer or least his band, must have written the lyrics. David E. Volk 12:57, 7 May 2008 (CDT)

OK, what am I missing that you are fixing?

-) Seriously, I'm apparently doing something wrong with formatting, but it looks as if you are either inserting or deleting a blank line...I think. Howard C. Berkowitz 13:41, 7 May 2008 (CDT)

Bible books

Might be good to put them at Genesis (Bible book), etc as they are probably ambiguous in many (most? all?) cases. J. Noel Chiappa 11:07, 6 June 2008 (CDT)

Ooops, sorry - that'll teach me to check the history!
As to move and delete: for delete, that has to be done by a CZ:Constable - see CZ:Article Deletion Policy for more. For moving - that's complex, I'm writing a page on how to do it, I'll let you know when it's done.
In general, check CZ:How To if you have this kind of question. J. Noel Chiappa 11:36, 6 June 2008 (CDT)

Dealing with duplicates

Hi, sorry I've been a bit slow responding to this - things have been crazy. Anyway...

I haven't actually cleared up many duplicate articles. Mostly what I've done is flagged a bunch of them. The thing is that dealing with a duplicate involves three steps:

  • Deciding what the preferable title is
  • Working out which article has the best content (i.e. should be saved as 'the' article on that topic)
  • Seeing if there's any useful material to be salvaged from the other one, and doing the salvage

All of those really kind of need someone with expertise in that area. Plus to which it's a lot of work, and I'm lazy! So generally I just note it, and let the relevant editors deal with it (or ignore the situation, a common result).

As to what to do when you find a pair: what I've been doing (this is not policy - yet - just my take) is drop a note on each one's talk page, tagged with the template {{Duplicate}} (which takes as an argument the name of the other duplicate article). That adds them to Category:Duplicate articles, so they don't get lost, and lets the editors know they need to clean things up (see above). J. Noel Chiappa 15:22, 7 June 2008 (CDT)

Element name spellings

Whoops! Um yeah, let's go with the EB spelling. I'll just go ahead and move the pages over :-)--David Yamakuchi 13:52, 18 June 2008 (CDT)

Ummm...yes. Confuse the Russians, confuse Congress.

Nahh...Congress does a good enough job confusing itself.

Thanks. I'll go fix it. Howard C. Berkowitz 14:44, 26 June 2008 (CDT)
