The dollar has been the official currency of Brunei since 1967, replacing the Malaya and British Borneo dollar. The Bruneian dollar is divided into 100 [cCents]]. The currency sign for the Bruneian dollar is '$' inside Brunei and 'B$' outside of Brunei.

In the Behasa Melayu language, the Bruneian dollar is called Ringgit Brunei to distunguish it from the Malaysian currency, which is called the ringgit. The Bruneian cent is called sen in Behasa Melayu.
