The Vietnam War was a two part successful effort of the Communist Party of Vietnam, led by Ho Chi Minh, to defeat France (1946-54), and then to overthrow the government of South Vietnam (1958-75) and take control of the whole country, in the face of military intervention by the United States (1964-72).
