Kumamoto prefecture (熊本県 Kumamoto-ken) is an area of Japan located on the island of Kyushu. Its population was 1,836,000 in 2006.[1]
Kumamoto prefecture shares its name with its own capital city, Kumamoto (熊本市 Kumamoto-shi). Eastwards of the city is the Aso caldera, a volcanic region of which the centre is Mount Aso (阿蘇山 Aso-san), Japan's largest active volcano.
