OpenDarwin?
First of all, is there any difference between Darwin and OpenDarwin? Secondly, I think it's worth noting that it can run open source GUIs like KDE. --Joshua David Williams 12:18, 11 April 2007 (CDT)
:Hehe well the fact that the OpenDarwin project is now shut down makes it different :) I was planning on addressing this in a section of the article. OpenDarwin was a "mirror" of Apple's Darwin. From that site: "OpenDarwin was meant to be a development community and a proving ground for fixes and features for Mac OS X and Darwin, which could be picked up by Apple for inclusion in the canonical sources. OpenDarwin has failed to achieve its goals in 4 years of operation, and moves further from achieving these goals as time goes on. For this reason, OpenDarwin will be shutting down." --Eric M Gearhart 12:23, 11 April 2007 (CDT)
::Ahh, yes, I remember that now. But besides the fact that the website is shutdown, what's the difference? Isn't it the same software? --Joshua David Williams 12:24, 11 April 2007 (CDT)
:::Well I think a way to handle this would be a redirect from OpenDarwin to a section on Darwin (operating system) that talks about OpenDarwin (like Darwin (operating system)#OPenDarwin). Darwin is developed at Apple. OpenDarwin was intended to be a mirror of that software that was worked on and improved by the community, not paid Apple developers. That's the distinction between the two --Eric M Gearhart 12:52, 11 April 2007 (CDT)
