New Mexico joined the United States of America as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. Its area is 121,593 square miles (314,925 square kilometers) and its estimated population is 1,984,356 (2008). Its border with Colorado on the north coincides with the 37th parallel of latitude; it shares with Arizona on the west the meridian of 109° W. Texas and the Mexican state of Chihuahua are to its south and Oklahoma and Texas are to its east.

The capital of New Mexico is Santa Fe.
