Apache Cassandra is an open source, distributed, non-relational database. It was originally developed by Avinash Lakshman and Prashant Malik for Facebook.[1] In 2008, Facebook released the source code for the project, which is now made available by the Apache Foundation under the Apache License.[2] As of June 2010, Cassandra remains in production use at Facebook, powering the inbox search features on facebook.com.[1]
