In medicine, renal dialysis is "therapy for the insufficient cleansing of the blood by the kidneys based on dialysis and including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and hemodiafiltration."[1]
Renal dialysis may be used as treatment for acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease.
For chronic kidney disease, renal dialysis can be delayed until the glomerular filtration rate is 7.0 ml per minute in the absence of other indications.[2]
Prognosis
About 1 in 12 patients who require temporary renal dialysis will eventually require chronic renal dialysis within 3 years.[3]
The role of dialysis in nursing home residents is not clear.[4]
