Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start, and see Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, our help system and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forum is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any user or the editors for help, too. Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun!

You can find some more information about our collaboration groups if you follow this link Citizendium_Pilot:Discipline_Workgroups.You can always ask me on my talk page or others about how to proceed or any other question you might have.

résumé

Fixed! And I credited you in the history :) --Eric M Gearhart 08:24, 4 April 2007 (CDT)

We are somewhat similar: I'm a computer nerd and gun nut who sometimes uses English words, you are a soldier acting as a computer nerd who sometimes uses French words, therefore I had to tackle this "résumé" thing :-)
Looking forward to write here about weapons and computers with your help Nat Makarevitch 09:24, 4 April 2007 (CDT)

Bonjour ;)

Bonjour !

Internationalisation

Hi! I’m just letting people who have expressed an interest in CZ International know that there is now a proposal on the table.

Please discuss its feasibility at: CZ:Proposals/Internationalisation sandbox in the Discussion area.

Feel free to help develop the proposal, as well.

We'll also need "drivers".

If you've got no idea what I'm talking about, please refer to: CZ:Proposals/New and CZ:Proposals

Hi again, Nat. Thank you very much for participating! Aleta Curry 16:58, 15 February 2008 (CST)

Developers

I read your note (on your user: page) about software which is better integrated into the 'style' of CZ, and I basically agree with you. One hitch: right now, the project doesn't appear to have many 'developer' resources at all! If we did, I think your points would be right on target. Lacking that, though, we struggle along with (slightly tweaked) MediaWiki. J. Noel Chiappa 15:07, 18 March 2008 (CDT)

That's a valid point! I thought about it and concluded that CZ, in order to attract contributors, must offer adequate tools. It implies development (AFAIK MediaWiki extensions will be sufficient), which in turn implies money because some needed thingies are not very pleasant to realize or administer. I exposed all this but (nearly 3 months later) have to read a reply. I'm afraid that this did not convinced anybody here. From my point of view it implies that CZ may therefore not gain an adequate momentum in the foreseeable future. Nat Makarevitch 17:00, 18 March 2008 (CDT)
This part I'm not sure sure about. First, even with the temporary systems we are using, we are drawing contributors; people seem to be remarkly tolerant, and understand that we are just getting started, and so are willing to put up with these temporary systems. Second, Wikipedia got off the ground without having paid developers (although now that it's a large operation, they are paid), so it can be done. Yes, if we had better software, we'd get more people, but I'm not sure it is making that much difference at this point. J. Noel Chiappa 18:39, 18 March 2008 (CDT)
we are drawing contributors: not fast enough, IMHO, given the amount of people interested in such a project (for example serious disgruntled Wikipedians). Let's see in 2 years. Active people are tolerant, but many are not joining or inactive.
Wikipedia got off the ground without having paid developers: WP, as I wrote it, was the first kid in town, it fetched much more interest from developers (work on MediaWiki sailed faster and faster). CZ, after being visible for a year, has to attract one. Nat Makarevitch 12:14, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
Out of WP came the MediaWiki software, which is one major technical hurdle we don't have to cross, so it's unfair to make that claim that we "need" developers as far as core operations go. Technically, a lot of things that we would like are probably plugins/mods. --Robert W King 12:19, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
MediaWiki is much more adequate for WP's approach than for CZ's.
plugins/mods:Indeed. The technical term is extensions and I already wrote above: (AFAIK MediaWiki extensions will be sufficient). Whichever term we use for them, we need to develop extensions/plugins/mods/wotever. Back to square 1 (this is depressingly usual on CZ): we need developers. If they don't come, if we want to sail instead of crawl (even on boring duties)... we have to pay them (or to make something/somebody pay), just as WikiMedia did. Back to square 0: where is the money and who decides to spend it? Please note that all this material was already in my good'ole post Nat Makarevitch 12:42, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
