Harold Brown is counselor and trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is a partner in Warburg, Pincus & Co., and a member of the Board of Directors of Evergreen Holdings, Inc., the Altria Group, and Philip Morris International. He is president emeritus of the California Institute of Technology, RAND Corporation, and the Trilateral Commission (North America).

From 1984 to 1992, he was chairman of the Foreign Policy Institute of the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, and was distinguished visiting professor 1981 to 1984

He was U.S. Secretary of Defense in the Jimmy Carter administration, and earlier, Secretary of the Air Force in the Nixon Administration. He also has been Director of Defense Research and Engineering.

He was a member of the Polaris Steering Committee for the first submarine-launched ballistic missile (1956–1958), a member of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board (1956–1961), and consultant to, and then member of, the President’s Science Advisory Committee (1958–1961). He was senior science adviser at the Conference on the Discontinuance of Nuclear Tests (1958–1959) and a delegate to the Strategic Arms Limitations Talks from 1969 to 1977.

Dr. Brown has lectured in physics at Columbia University, Stevens Institute of Technology, and the University of California (1947–1952); was group leader, division leader, and later, director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1952–1961). As a physicist, His research interests included nuclear explosive design, applications of nuclear explosives to military and non-military purposes, controlled release of thermonuclear energy, nuclear reactors-of advanced design and weapon systems of numerous kinds. He also has conducted research and analysis in the problems of detecting nuclear explosions in various environments, and has participated in a number of studies in the area of arms limitation and control.
