Ben Nelson is a U.S. Senator from Nebraska, often considered the most conservative Democrat in the Senate. He recently denied suggestions he intended to become an Independent or a Republican, telling an interviewer that the Republican party does not include many ideologies, and "Certainly, if you look at the partisan votes recently," he said, "it's been pretty much lockstep, and I'm not one who's comfortable being that way." He has opposed jobs legislation without clear funding, the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court of the United States, elements of healthcare reform including the "public option" favored by many in his party's base.
