The American Foreign Policy Council was founded in 1982,as a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing information to those who make or influence the foreign policy of the United States and to assisting world leaders, particularly in the former Soviet Union, with building democracies and market economies. [1] From the original Soviet focus, it now has six major areas of interest:

  • Central Asian Counterterrorism
  • China
  • Eurasia program: regional security in the greater Middle East, Russian regional policy, energy and security in Central Asia, and transnational threats
  • Ballistic missile defense and weapons of mass destruction
  • Iran: aims at democracy promotion and threat reduction
  • Russia: assumes a policy of engagement
