Among the first airborne targeting pods that was cost-effective to operate in the infrared|medium infrared wavelengths, is the AN-|AN/ASQ-228, with both air-to-air and air-to ground capabilities. It is manufactured by Raytheon. These wavelengths offer longer range than earlier models, but had been prohibiitively expensive until this unit, not cheap at $3.4 million each, apparently provides enough performance advantage to justify moving to this part of the spectrum.[1] It now provides laser rangefinder and optional navigation FLIR functions.

Initially deployed, in 2004, for the F-18 Super Hornet, and planned for all such aircraft, it also offers electro-optical targeting in the visual light spectrum. [2] Future enhancements include:

  • Laser designator|Laser designation
  • Automatic target recognition
  • Improved EO camera and laser spot tracker
  • Increased detection range
