First deployed as the AAR-47 missile launch warning set, detecting the infrared energy of the exhaust, the current AN/AAR-47 Missile and Laser Warning System has been upgraded, as the AAR-47 (V)2 to detect laser energy, replacing the AN-|AN/AVR-2 laser detector receivers. The United States Navy is making the upgrade to their AAR-47s, although the U.S. Army and United States Air Force are not.[1]

It can cueing|cue countermeasures launchers including the AN-|AN/ALE-39, AN-|AN/ALE-40 or AN-|AN/ALE-47.

Navy

Eventually, the Navy wants to replace approximately 1500 AN/AAR-47, AN/AVR-2, and AN/AVR-2A with the (V)2. They will eventually be on P-3 Orion, C-130 Hercules, H-60 helicopter|H-60 helicopter family, and V-22 Osprey aircraft. An AAR-47B(V)2 upgrade is finishing testing in 2008, and will be applied to existing systems.

Army and Air Force

The Army and Air Force, who use the AAR-47, are not currently planning to upgrade to the AAR-47(V)2. Aircraft equipped with the AAR-47 include the UH-1N, C-130 Hercules, C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III, MH-53 PAVE LOW, CH-47 Chinook|MH-47 Chinook and H-50 helicopter|MH-60.[2]
